Elementary Level (Grades 1 - 4)

Religion

In religion, grades 1 through 4 study the Church community, the trinity, the seven sacraments, and the life of Jesus; learn a variety of prayers; and pray the Rosary together.  They learn about the order of the Mass, and participate in liturgies and prayer services.  Second grade prepares for Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.  In addition, fourth grade concentrates on the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, and the Corporal and Sprirtual Works of Mercy.

Math

In grades 1 through 4, the Math curriculum includes place value, money, telling time, fractions, addition and subtraction facts, and problem solving.  In third and fourth grade, multiplication and division facts are taught.

Reading

The reading program centers on phonetic awareness, decoding skills, word recognition, vocabulary and concept development, comprehension and analysis of text, and oral fluency in all grade levels.

English

The English curriculum includes sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, composition and oral presentations.

Spelling

The Spelling curriculum includes the introduction, study, and testing of basic word lists as well as additional challenge words.

Handwriting

Manuscript writing is reviewed and practiced in first and second grade. Cursive writing is introduced during the second nine weeks of second grade.  It is reviewed and mastered in third and fourth grade.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, the first grade learns about families, jobs, and the four seasons.  Second grade studies the community, the Earth, and learns why people work.  Third grade learns about the different types of communities, such as rural, urban, and suburban.  Fourth grade studies regions of the United States and Pennsylvania.  All grades incorporate citizenship, history, geography, and government.

Science

Grades 1 through 4 study Life Science, including animals, plants, and ecosystems; Earth Science, including habitats, weather, and oceans; and Physical Science, including matter, movement, sound, energy, light, electricity, and magnetism.

Health

In grades 1 and 2, Health is taught as part of the Science curriculum and is integrated into other subject areas. In grades 3 and 4, a separate Health curriculum includes dental health, food groups, the human body and its systems, disease, safety, and community health problems.

Spanish

The Spanish curriculum centers on usage of the Español Para Tí video program, which helps build vocabulary and conversational skills.
